Goals in Life
They all say everyone has a goal or a job in life. That is very true, but what is that goal or job? Half the people who go to college go to get an education in something they love. But do they really use that information. Now I’m not saying people who go to college and graduate and get a degree in something they love will never use that because most likely they will. What I’m trying to say is do the job you want to do in life and don’t let anybody else tell you different. In my life my goal is skiing. Ever since I could walk, skiing has been a huge part of my life. I was on the Hailey Ski Team up until I was 10 years old. Skiing and racing with all of my friends. I joined the Sun Valley Ski Team the following year and really set my mind towards being the best down hill ski racer I could be. From when I was 11 up until I was 16 years old I was a ski racer. I raced in every event it had to offer Slalom, Giant Slalom, Super G and Downhill. Downhill of course was my favorite cause you got to go as fast as you wanted to. These five years that I spent racing where some of the best years of my life. I got to ski in some of the most amazing places some would not even imagine going too. I have skied from Switzerland to the beautiful west and east coasts in the US. Some of my race achievements where 1st at the Jackson Hole Super, 1st at the Laura Flood GS in Sun Valley, 3rd at last Chance SL in Snow Bird. I also got the Mountain man award the last year I was on the ski race team.
Though ski racing was the best thing that could ever happen to my skiing, every story has an ending. That next season when I was a junior in high school I made the switch from a ski racer to a full on park and pipe skier. This switch for me was the best thing I could have ever done with my skiing at the time. During the fall of the upcoming year, I got put into the best spot I could be in, I went to the head of the ski team as well as the moguls coach Andy Ware and said we should really put together a park and pipe team. It all went together as planned the Sun Valley Ski Team was super pumped on it and they got a coach who I actually have known my whole life and am best friends with to this day. His name is Ben Verge and he is still my coach. So with the years of training and working my hardest at my skiing, I just kept getting bigger and better. Ben and I kept going to bigger and better contests as well. So the progression just kept growing and Ben just kept pushing me to be the best skier I could be and it really showed this past year in my skiing, when I got a 9th place at the Fis-Nor-Am Halfpipe in Sun Valley 2010-Twice, 1st At the 511 rail jam- 2010, 1st and 2nd at the Smith Limo rail jam series- 2010, 2nd at the Cricket Rail Jam Boise ID stop- 2010, 6th at Nor Am Finals in Boreal- 2010, 6th at U.S. National Championships- Halfpipe-2010. So all in all it was an amazing year for me!
Throughout all of these years, I really owe it all to my family. Whether it was varsity soccer, skateboard or skiing they helped me though every step of the way. Encouraging me to be the best person I could be at whatever I was doing. I really feel they did a great job at it because I’m sitting in one of the best positions that I could not even imagine being in three years ago. I really feel that since my mom and dad raising me in one of the the best places in the world, it layed the groundwork for my life goal and played a huge roll in where I’m at today. My mother, who has a background in skiing, made it even better for me to grow up and love skiing. Shelly Brehmer, my mom, grew up in Minnesota. She skied on the University of Minnesota racing team all throughout her four years in college. When she moved to Sun Valley Idaho she worked for Scott goggles for ten years. So that alone was another huge factor to my skiing success. My dad on the other hand, Dick Brehmer, was a little different. He was a diver. He drove for Poseidon City College in California and after that he moved to Aspen Colorado to work on the ski mountain. From there, he found Sun Valley Idaho, where he worked on the mountain and met my beautiful mother. So with a good air since from my dad and a great out look into skiing from my mom I was bound to be a good skier in whichever event I chose.
I really think in life we are able to choose what we want to do with our lives at any point in time. But sometimes we choose to listen to others and let them choose what we do in life. In this day in age we are pressured into doing many things that makes it hard to continue reaching for our goals. That’s why in your life you are the leader of your own destiny and you say what goes and what doesn’t go. I feel that so many people listen to what others think about them or their goals, when really they are doing everything fine and just don’t take the time to take it all in. That’s why I feel I am stronger person because I am the leader of my own life. I have people constantly telling me things like you should change this and change that, but I listen to them to become a better skier. You are your own boss, so do what you want to do and don’t let anyone else tell you otherwise.
We all have goals and jobs in life, but we are the ones to choose those goals or careers. Mine is skiing, someone else’s might be a doctor or lawyer. It’s up to you to choose that career or goal in life. Don’t let anyone else tell you differently if you have a passion for whatever you are doing. You are the ruler of yourself no one else is. Only you have the power to choose and it’s up to you to choose what you want to do.
